Polk City is located within a 20 minute drive of the capital of Iowa, Des Moines, making it a great home for those who desire big city convenience but still want to enjoy the comforts of small town living. While Polk City can be considered a smaller city according to the 2010 census, which recorded its population as being 3,418 and its total area covering 4.47 square miles, it’s still bigger than some of the other nearby towns located in the same county. In fact, Polk City is only expected to grow over the next few years if the last decade and a half were any indication: the population was only at 2,344 according to the 2000 census.

Shopping and Dining

Polk City real estate owners have the ability to enjoy several different restaurants and shops around town. Anyone looking for a place to catch an Iowa or Iowa State basketball game – or any other sports game for that matter – should go down to Dottie’s Landmark Bar & Grill. This small town bar has some fantastic food, such as the Graziano sausage sandwich. Another local favorite is Papa’s Pizzeria, which has arguably the best pizza in town! Polk City real estate owners who like to grab a bite to eat in the morning before work along with a cup of Joe should be sure to drop in at the Reising Sun Café as well.

As far as shopping goes, Polk City has several different stores in town, including Treasures and More Consignment Shop and the Polk City Bait & Tackle Shop. There are plenty of stores in the surrounding areas as well, including Redeker’s Furniture & Carpets, Archer Home Center, Sassman Glass & Mirror and more. For nationwide retail stores, residents can take the short drive out to Ankeny to get what they need at Staples, Home Depot, Walmart and more. Ankeny is also home to a variety of different local stores and restaurants for anyone who wants to try something new – and it’s less than 10 miles away.

Parks and Recreation

Residents will find that there are some beautiful parks located nearby their Polk City real estate. In fact, Polk City is less than 4 miles south of one of the biggest parks in the area – Big Creek State Park. Big Creek State Park is known as one of the most beautiful parks in the state and offers all types of recreational activities to residents of Polk City. Spend an entire weekend enjoying the scenic surroundings by camping out in their modern or non-modern areas. Their modern camping areas have cable TV hookups, sewer and water hook-ups and heated shower buildings. Those who love the outdoors but not enough to camp out in a trailer or tent can rent a cabin or lodge instead. During the day, visitors can go hiking and biking on miles upon miles worth of trails, go boating, kayaking, canoeing or swimming in the lake, go horseback riding or go fishing. During the winter season, there’s even snowmobiling available! Another option is to go Saylorville Lake, which is located south of Big Creek State Park and is only a few miles to the west and to the south of Polk City. Saylorville Lake boasts 2 swimming beaches, plenty of camping and picnic areas, a marina that has docks and moorings for both power boats and sailboats and much more. If that wasn’t enough, the Tournament Club of Iowa is only a mile away from the center of Polk City. As the only Arnold Palmer Signature Course in the state, this golf course is the ideal location for golf enthusiasts of all ages – and it’s open to the public for a daily fee.


Some of the main industries in Polk City include finance and insurance, healthcare and social assistance, educational services, manufacturing and construction. As far as employment goes, some of the more common occupations include electrical equipment mechanics, computer specialists, financial clerks and office and administrative support workers. The unemployment rate has historically been quite low in Polk City. In 2010, the unemployment rate was only 3.5 percent, compared to the 6.8 percent state and 9.5 percent national unemployment rates. The poverty level is also incredibly low at 2.4 percent, compared to the state 8.1 percent poverty level and the national 12.3 percent poverty level.

Schools, Health and Transportation

Children living in Polk City will be going to schools in the North Polk Community School District. The city is home to 2 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school.

The two closest hospitals are the Mercy Medical Center and the Iowa Lutheran Hospital, both in Des Moines.

Although there is not full service public transportation throughout Polk City, the Des Moines Area Transit (DART) offers an On Call Service that will transport residents from locations near their home or workplace to the nearest DART station. The majority of residents drive. The closest airport is the Des Moines International Airport.
