Real estate in Ankeny, Iowa has been in huge demand over the last decade. The town itself, located directly north of Des Moines, has experienced an outright boom in its population growth from 2000, during which it had a population of 27,117, to 2010, when the last census recorded its population at 45,562. That’s an incredible increase of 68 percent. The City of Ankeny was founded in 1875 and incorporated in 1903 and served as a railroad link from Des Moines to Ames. In its early days, Ankeny was known as a coal-mining town. During WWII, the town became home to an ammunition manufacturing plant. As demand for Ankeny real estate continues to grow, it is believed that the population will continue to increase, with predictions suggesting that it will reach 55,000 by 2020.

Shopping and Dining

With Ankeny's rapid growth in population, it should come as no surprise that there are many different shopping and dining options popping up all over the city. Residents have numerous options to try out, from Mediterranean cuisine to authentic Mexican food. Restaurants worth checking out include Wig & Pen Pizza Pub, Panchero’s Mexican Grill, Pho 85 and Yanni’s Grill & Vinyard, just to name a few.

Extensive shopping selections include major retailers such as Target, Walmart Supercenter and Staples, while local stores include The Funky Zebras, Ankeny Glass and Rodman Comics. Two areas worth checking out for all of one’s shopping needs include the Delaware Shopping District and the historic uptown Ankeny shopping district. If one can’t find what they need in town they are able to drive down to Des Moines, which is within 11 miles away.

Parks and Recreation

Owners of Ankeny real estate that participate in active lifestyles or simply enjoy the outdoors will have plenty of parks and recreation options to partake in throughout the city. In fact, the number of parks that the city has is actually quite impressive. There are 40 city parks that residents can enjoy as well as 34 miles of trail and two aquatic centers. Additionally, Ankeny is only a short distance away from the beautiful Saylorville Lake, which is known for its boating. Slightly north of Saylorville Lake is the Big Creek State Park, which is an excellent spot for boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, picnicking and more.


The quality of life in Ankeny is relatively high, especially when compared with state data. For example, the unemployment rate has stayed low over the last few years with a respectable 3.6 percent unemployment rate in 2010, compared to that of Iowa, which at that time had an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent, and the country as a whole, which had a 9.5 percent unemployment rate. The poverty level is quite low in Ankeny as well at 4 percent, less than half of Iowa’s 8.1 percent unemployment rate. The most common industries in Ankeny are finance and insurance, manufacturing and retail trade. The most common occupations include sales, management occupations and computer specialists. There are a number of large employers located in the area, such as the Perishable Distributors of Iowa, Deere & Company’s Des Moines Works as well as SYSCO Food Services of Iowa, to name a few.

Schools, Health and Transportation

Children living in Ankeny attend school in the Ankeny Community School District, which consists of 9 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 2 high schools. High education opportunities around Ankeny include the Des Moines Area Community College and Simpson College.

Ankeny real estate is located within short distance of numerous family practices, making general healthcare easily accessible. Emergency care can be obtained at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center. There are several hospitals with emergency services located in nearby Des Moines as well, including the Iowa Lutheran Hospital and the Mercy West Lakes Hospital.

The majority of Ankeny residents tend to drive, but there are some public transportation options. The Des Moines Area Regional Transit (DART) system offers daily connections for residents of Ankeny to the rest of the metro area. There are also several bus services available, including Burlington Trail, Greyhound and Jefferson Bus Lines. Ankeny is also within 20 miles from the Des Moines International Airport.
